MARIE SKLODOWSKA CURIE PhD FELLOWSHIP

The main general objective of the project will be to define the “probiotic” status of GRAS (generally recognized as safe), fermented food-associated microbes, with particular emphasis on non-conventional probiotic tracts and investigate, also in cooperation with other ESRs, by applying different in vitro and in vivo models, the possible impact of selected active strains on animal/human health.

OBJECTIVES

  • Characterize a collection of 22 L. plantarum strains through different in vitro approaches.
  • Produce by scaling-up in fermenters as lyophilized cells a pool of the selected strains.
  • Evaluate the ability of modulation between selected strains and ED and obesity-genes related.
  • To test the immunomodulatory and BSH activities of orally administered set of plantarum strains in mice models.
  • Genomic sequencing of the selected strains

EXPECTED RESULTS

  • Availability of a culture collection of strains characterized in vitro and in vivo for antigenotoxic, BSH and immunomodulatory activities.
  • Production of a stable formulation of plantarum as lyophilize cells with potential health properties.
  • Acquisition of language and communication skills through the overall REP-EAT dissemination and communication activities and participating in international conferences and workshops.

PLANNED SECONDMENT

  • The first secondment was planned after 8 months in Synbiotec (Camerino, Italy) under the supervision of Prof. Alberto Cresci during 2 months.

  • The third phase will be carried out at University College Cork (Cork, Ireland), from October 2018 to December 2019 under the supervision of Dr. Cormac Gahan.
